Celery
Both self blanching and trench varieties are sown with heat in March and April, transplanting in May and June.Planting trench varieties 23cm (9")apart within the 45cm (18 ?)wide by 30cm (1ft)deep trench.Self blanching varieties should be planted in blocks with 23cm (9")spacing in each direction.Celery requires a constant supply of manure, water and liquid feed to attain best results.Trench varieties also require earthing up.Achieve this by wrapping paper around the stems in August and drawing soil up around them, taking care not to get soil in the crown. Complete earthing up in September when only the top leaves should be showing.Protect tops from the most severe weather. There are three main pests of celery.Firstly Celery Fly which can be controlled by pinching out affected leaves and destroying them,or by using a relevant insecticide.Secondly,Celery Leaf Spot can be sprayed at first signs of attack and repeated as necessary. Finally slugs, which can be controlled with a number of products.
