Jerusalem Artichoke Growing Instructions
Unpack straight away and, if not planting immediately place crowns in a box or seed tray, surrounding the roots with moist peat. Keep somewhere cool and light.
Jerusalem Artichokes are related to the sunflower and can reach over 3 m (10 ft) tall.
They will grow in any soil type providing it is not too acidic or waterlogged. (It is a useful plant for breaking up heavy land). No feeding or manuring is required as this encourages the growth of foliage at the expense of the tubers.
Plant 15 cm (6 inches) deep and 45 cm (18 inches) apart in March through to April. Some support may be required, stretch wire between posts at a height of about 180-cm (6-ft).
Remove flower heads as they appear. In October when foliage turns brown, cut down to 30 cm (12 inches) above the ground and lift as required. Cover stem bases with soil or straw in severe weather.
Ensure all tubers are removed from the ground at the end of the season or they will return as weeds.
